Mission in the LSMS lab#

SCITAS, through the application support service, provides an HPC application expert at 50% to the Computation Solid Mechanics Lab (LSMS) to develop and improve their finite element code Akantu, and to provide first level support for code development and cluster usage to the members of the lab.

Akantu#

Akantu is an optimized object-oriented finite element library developed at LSMS. This library aims to be generic with a specialization in methods for dynamic fracture and contact simulations. It is designed to run on clusters using MPI.

The images below show two examples of fracture simulation performed using Akantu. The left one is the fracture of a tempered glass plate using a method called extrinsic cohesive elements. The right one is a simulation of an explosive boundary condition in a ceramic sphere. The fractures are simulated with a continuum damage material regularized with an integral method. Both simulations were performed using around 100 cores.
