Lyra#

Beta phase

During the beta-testing phase, all usage on Lyra will be free of charge until 30 September 2026. No invoices will be issued for usage during this period. Please keep in mind that Lyra is still undergoing its final acceptance. The service may therefore be subject to configuration changes, interruptions, or short-notice maintenance operations. Running jobs may be terminated and unsaved data could be lost, so we recommend that workflows save checkpoints regularly.

Research Cluster

This cluster is for pay-per-use accounts. Master students and courses cannot use Lyra. For the educational GPU cluster check Izar.

Useful information#

Connecting to the clusters#

To connect to the cluster you should:

ssh <username>@lyra.hpc.epfl.ch

Here's the list of current fingerprints you should expect when connecting to this cluster:

QOS#

The standard QOS are:

  • normal for jobs with a time limit of 3 days. This is the default;
  • long for jobs with a time limit of 7 days;
  • build for compiling your codes, with up to 16 cores on 1 node without any GPUs;
  • debug for debugging jobs on up to 2 nodes, with a high priority and a time limit of 1 hour.

Choose one with -q <qos> or --qos <qos>.

You can find more information about QoSes on our dedicated page: Slurm QoS and partitions.

Partitions#

There are 2 partitions on Lyra, to differentiate nodes based on GPU type and use case:

The rtx6000 partition consists of 14 compute nodes, each equipped with 8 NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs with 96 GB of GPU memory each, 2 AMD EPYC 9535 64-Core processors for a total of 128 CPU cores, and 768 GB of system memory. This configuration corresponds to 16 CPU cores per GPU and approximately 5.9 GB of system memory per CPU core.

The b200 partition consists of 8 compute nodes, each equipped with 8 NVIDIA B200 GPUs, 2 Intel Xeon Platinum 8568Y+ 48-Core processors for a total of 96 CPU cores, and 1536 GB of system memory. This configuration corresponds to 12 CPU cores per GPU and approximately 14.5 GB of system memory per CPU core.

There is no default partition. You must choose one.

Choose one with -p <partition> or --partition <partition>.

Automatic assignment of RAM per core

We automatically assign 5900 MB of RAM per CPU core associated with the job on the rtx6000 partition and 15900 MB of RAM per CPU core associated with the job on the b200 partition. You cannot ask for more RAM than this, even by specifying --mem.

You can find more information about partitions on our dedicated page: Slurm QoS and partitions.
